In 1866, Ms. Fontaine Maury Davidson, a school teacher from Petersburg, Virginia, took a number of her students to Blanchford Cemetery to decorate Confederate Graves.  As it happened, Mrs. Mary Cunningham Logan, the wife of General John A. Logan, was present that day and saw the children putting flowers on the graves.  Mrs. Logan was so touched by this gesture of respect and loving remembrance that she told her husband about it.  General Logan was the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, our Nation's first Veteran's Organization.
